It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is right around the corner and there are few things as lovely as creating a festive setting that your friends and family can enjoy as they tuck into the holiday feast. This year, we thought we’d share a few budget-friendly tips on decorating your space. After all, it doesn’t need to be expensive to be memorable! Here goes:
Get the kids involved
Any parent will tell you that any opportunity to keep the kids busy is welcome over the school holidays. This year, rope in your kids (or your sister’s or the neighbour’s) to help you create a few endearing hand-made decorations. E.g. fill a few empty tins with a little soil and pebbles, paint it a bright colour, stick a dry twig in there and decorate it with hand-made ornaments. Make one for each place setting, so your guests have a little party favour to take home. Here’s a handy salt dough ornament recipe. It’s great for making low-cost, kid-friendly trinkets for the tree as well.
Have your guests make their own!
Sitting around the lunch- or dinner table doesn’t have to be boring. Instead of decorating the table yourself this year, cover it with brown paper, newspaper or butcher’s paper. Then fill a few tins with art supplies as your centre pieces and tell your guests to go to town on your ‘table cloth’. If you really want to up the ante, you could challenge each guest to paint the person seated across from them on a little canvas (available from most art stores at reasonable prices), which they can then take home.
Take it outside
Not keen on the whole sit-down affair when the weather is so lovely out? No problem! No one said you had to hang out around the table. This year, feel free to go al fresco. Put out a few picnic blankets, pitch a gazebo or an umbrella or two and make it a picnic-style Christmas. Keep things festive by hanging a few ornaments in your trees outside. Bonus points if you go green and install some solar fairy lights instead of the plug-in kind.
TOP TIP: Waste not, want not! If you don’t want to get bogged down with a bunch of decorations that you won’t use for the rest of the year, consider renting the flatware, utensils and accessories for your festive feast. Just make sure you contact your favourite rental agency ASAP to check when they close for their festive break.
